The storytales children- and youth book festival 2021 from Buchkinder Kassel e.V. brought into being. It combines a multilingual interactive book exhibition with a diverse reading- and workshop offerings. With its free and low-threshold offer, we would like to contribute to the visibility of social diversity, for cultural participation, to promote reading skills and aesthetic education.

The heart of the festival, the interactive book exhibition, can be experienced every year through a rally. She stimulates, to actively engage with the books and become creative in the process. After the festival, the multilingual and carefully curated book selection will be added to the youth library’s holdings, so that the books remain permanently and easily accessible.
A special offer of the festival are the guided tours through the exhibition for daycare centers, after-school care centers and schools.

With the storytales children's and youth book festival we want to create a place, where young people can discover selected books, where you can read and browse undisturbed and at the same time there are contact persons at your side.

In cooperation with the children- and Kassel youth library, which makes the books on display available on loan, and the Schlachthof cultural center, we are establishing this place in Kassel's North Holland district.

The importance of reading skills in terms of education and equal opportunities is undeniable.

Book selection

Our selection of books is based on intensive research into new publications, Recommendations from bookstores, Blogs and our circle of friends. We don’t just take the content-related topics into account, but also the diversity of design and we strive, to include various publishers and authors and illustrators.

The books on display are not only characterized by their stories, but also through their special graphic design. In this way, aesthetic education and the ability to express oneself can be promoted.

Our festival celebrates the diversity of stories and narrators and supports the change towards more diversity in children's education- and young adult literature. For us, diversity doesn’t just mean meeting criteria, but rather the authentic depiction of our diverse realities of life.

The storytales festival is organized by Buchkinder Kassel e. V., which 2015 founded with conviction, that every child has their own story and can tell it in a fantastic way.

After her school days in Kassel, Hannah moved to Tübingen and channeled her enthusiasm for books and stories, which she developed early as a child, into studying: International Literatures and Indology. 2017 she's back to Kassel, to start your master's degree in German studies. Through the birth of her two sons, Between temporary work in a bookstore and her studies, she is up to her ears in the subject of children's and young adult literature. She organizes program items at the storytales festival, researches the book list and submits applications.

Leena studied visual communication at the Kassel Art University. She particularly enjoyed reading books during her studies- and paper workshop stopped, loves well-designed books and good stories. 2015 She founded Buchkinder Kassel together with Karoline Zorbas and has been part of the team ever since. She also works as a freelancer in the field of graphic design. At the storytales festival she takes care of graphics, Participation stations, Mediation formats, Exhibition design and room concept. She lives in a shared apartment in Kassel with her two teenage children.

After a stint in Berlin, she studied fine arts in Kassel, her photo book “Halbe Tage” was published 2022 in Revolver Verlag. She found her way to the Kassel youth library through her own reading-loving children and has been intensively involved with children's and young adult literature ever since. In addition to your own projects, She works in the art education field and as a teacher and is responsible for the book selection and program at the storytales children's and youth book festival.

Elena studied art education and visual communication and particularly devoted herself to graphic storytelling. She is fascinated by it, how images and text interact. She has been working in the Buchkinder Kassel e.V. team for several years. and in cultural education projects. At the storytales festival she is for finance, Responsible for mediation and graphics.
